Some of us live hectic and frantic lives. Traveling by gondola can bring you beauty and tranquility.

Blue Boat

Blue Boat has been my best selling print out all the Venice images that I have produced. It started life as a 35mm slide, but there was a considerable amount of time spent in an early version of photoshop to get the look that I was searching for.

Polaroid Transfer.

Polaroid no longer make their famous instant print film, but now Fuji have a 4 x 5 version, FB - 100B that will fit some of the old Polaroid holders. My photo was taken with the old Polaroid print film, using the transfer method onto watercolor paper.

Out to dry.

Maybe its due to the limited space in Venice that there are few clothes dryers, or maybe its just a tourist gimmick!

Waiting

Even the tourism in Venice has been effected by the European financial crisis. Nikon D200 with 200mm f2.8 Nikkor lens.

Piazzetta.

The most busiest place in Venice, unless you come at first light of the morning, or offer to take everyone in the Piazzetta to lunch, on condition they keep out of camera sight! No, thats too much lire! Olympus OM1n, with 21mm lens.

Lovers in the Rain

Rain! When most people are quickly running for cover, or putting away their cameras, I grab the opportunity to photograph in the rain. You do need to protect your camera from getting wet, but rain adds to the dynamics of the photo, and can be the dominant subject.

Doge's Palace, Venice.

The West facade of the Doge's Palace, Venice. A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, built in the 15th century. The balcony was added in 1536. The Palace was the seat of the Venetian Republic Government. Nikon D200, with 12-24mm lens.

Lovers, Venice.

Venice is most certainly a romantic place, but with little chance to have the place to yourself. This couple were lucky, apart from the photographer taking the photo of them. Olympus OM1 with 300mm lens.

Promenade Stroll.

Customer or pigeon pie? The waiters attention was fully on the strolling pigeon when I took this photo. Nikon D70 with 18-70mm lens.

Venice Vision

Apart from all the wonderful restaurants in Venice, architecture and canals are two of the strongest attractions of Venice. I have combined the two elements in this photo. Nikon D2x with 80-200mm lens.

Festival Mask

There are many stores throughout Venice that make and sell masks in a great variety of designs and colors. This one was rather unusual with respect to the natural materials used. Nikon D200 with 18-70mm Nikkor lens.

Gondola Chair

Some of the carved detail on gondolas are very ornate and worth looking at. Cherubs, cupids, sea horses and dolphins are popular subjects. Nikon D200 with 80-200mm Nikkor lens.

Venezia Poster.

There were several thousand gondolas in Venice during the 18th century. Today there are several hundred, but they still remain one of the iconic symbols of Venice. The ornament on the bow is called a ferro (meaning iron) and serves as a counter balance for the gondolier at the stern. Nikon D200 with 80-200mm lens. Post production with photoshop.

Venezia Poster.

I have a passion for travel posters from the 1930s, which was probably the golden era of poster design. This poster is one of several Venice posters that I have designed.

San Giorgio Maggiore.

This is the view that most photographers cannot resist, including me. I waited for the promenading pigeons to come into my viewpoint. Nikon D200 with 17-70mm lens.

Gondolas.

Gondola is a 16th century Venetian word which means 'to rock, roll,' but don't let that put you off from taking a ride in one of the best ways of seeing Venice. Nikon D200 with 80-200mm 2.8 Nikkor lens.

Venetian Facade.

Photo montage was a lot more difficult and time consuming before Photoshop and all the other photo manipulation software. This is a combination of two photos together. The facade is seen as a negative. Nikon D200 with 17-70mm Nikkor lens.

Morning Mist, Venice.

There is a greater sense of depth and mystery when photographing in the mist. Objects in the distance lose detail and become flat shapes, or are lost altogether. Black & white photography works very well in these conditions. Nikon D70 with Nikkor 80-200mm 2.8 lens.

Venetian Window.

Venice has had so many different architectural influences over the centuries, which is one of the reasons its so interesting. Nikon D200 with 80-200mm lens.

Venetian backwater.

I could spend the rest of my life walking around Venice, and never grow tired of it. There is always something new and interesting to be discovered around the next corner. Nikon D70 with 17-70mm lens.

Fading Facade

I love the weathered patinas on old buildings. They can make a great subject to photograph. Nikon D200 with 80-200mm 2.8 lens.

Morning Walk.

Early morning is a great time to take photos. The light can be at its best, and there are fewer people to hinder you or the view. Nikon D200 with 17-70mm Nikkor lens.
